As the successor to the Yale of Beaufort and the 8th release in the famed Queen’s beasts series from The Royal Mint, the White Lion of Mortimer maintains the high standard and meticulous design for which the series is known. The White Lion of Mortimer is an adaptation from the original application of Anne of Mortimer, the mother of Richard Duke of York, and thus the Grandmother of King Edward IV and Richard III.

Held on the reverse side is the White Lion of Mortimer, as he bears a Yorkist shield that has been adorned with the White Rose en Soleil or a white rose that has been overlayed upon a shining sun. The White Rose en Soleil is commonly used as one of the official badges of the Royal House of York. The Lion is absent of the royal crown and is sitting in a more “tame,” seated position. The background of the coin contains the distinctive textured background that characterizes the Queen’s beast series. The heraldic beast’s title encapsulates the image; it’s denomination, year of issue, and 9999 pure gold content.

The obverse contains the modern effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, with great attention to detail. The Queen’s title and the denominational value encircle the effigy.
