As an animal that is exclusive to “The Great Down Under,” the Kangaroo serves as an excellent feature for the Perth Mint’s marquee, annual bullion release. The intriguing marsupial is revered for its unique look, incredible leaping ability, and speed- they can leap up to 30 meters in a single bound, at 48 kilometers an hour, and size-growing up to 1.8 meters tall. Known as the Australian Golden nugget until 1989, the series retained the concept of having a dynamic and evolving reverse side design, adding collectability to the golden range of Kangaroos. Since then, the highly popular gold coin has gone on to gain international notoriety adorning the largest bullion coin ever made, at the time in 2014, on tonne Kangaroo with a face value of 1 million Australian Dollars! With 31 years of minting, the Kangaroo is firmly established as a sound and liquid investment!

These unique edition coins feature innovative techniques in numismatics, the Perth mint applied the gilding on the background instead of the bounding kangaroo in focus. The same process was applied on the obverse to the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint’s 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990.
